Last week I was asked to photograph Nicola Sturgeon, the Deputy First Minister of Scotland. Being a pretty busy person, we were on very limited time but I loved this shot. The contrst of the wall in her office with the colour of her coat works brilliantly. I'm glad the magazine chose this image too as I feel it captured her personality pretty well too.

Just a quick heads up that an image of mine will on display at the calumet gallery in New York from the 11th - 20th of January.

Taken as party of the YPA programme, it'll feature alongside dozens of selected photographers from The US and is one of 18 images from the UK.

A few weeks ago I had the chance to take the portrait of Barbara Tuge-Erecińska; Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the United Kingdom. Images were taken in The Signet Library, Parliament Square, Edinburgh.

Edward Green for Strathclyde University.

Pictured are images for the University of Strathclyde's "People" magazine.

Edward Green is a Strathclyde alumni, respected businessman and former Crown jeweller. I was asked to photograph him for the White Light Media produced on-line magazine. A very interesting and nice man, you can read more about him on page 3 of the magazine.

He was an incredibly interesting and friendly man - his career has seen him go from feeding the queen's corgies to becoming MD of Mappin & Webb and overseeing the purchase of jewellery for the Royal family.

Scottish Youth Parliament "Love Equally" Campaign

Last week, The Scottish Youth Parliament launched their "Love Equally" campaign which promotes equal marriage for gay, lesbian and trans-gender individuals. The SYP asked me to help document this.

To launch the campaign, young people and SYP Chair, Grant Costello, gathered at The Scottish Parliament. They were joined by MSPs Marco Biagi & Patrick Harvey. When there, they staged a mock wedding ceremony between same sex couples.

Scottish Youth Parliament

Recently, I photographed the lovely folk at The Scottish Youth parliament for their new website launch. They've just moved into new premises at Holyrood and wanted to reflect their new positioning beside the parliament in their corporate headshots.

As they stride the divide between youth action and politics, we decided to go for quite a friendly look for the images to be as open and as engaging as possible. We got pretty lucky with the weather and the rain let off for enough time to get some nice images. Here are some of the results.

Dr. Belinda Weller for the MS Society.

Continuing my work with the MS Society, I was asked to photograph Dr Belinda Weller, who is involved in MS research, at Edinburgh's Department of Clinical Neurology. The images will be used for the front cover of their annual review as well as to accompany a press release about the recently launched MS Register. An exciting new scheme to accurately register MS sufferers in Scotland and the UK.

Scotland appears to have the highest number of people with MS in the world in terms of % of the population but facts and figures on this are vague. This is where the register will come in. Read more about the initiative here.

Cake Break for The MS Society of Scotland.

A couple of weeks ago I photographed Grant Stott as part of the MS Society Scotland's launch of "Cake Break". The image appeared in various national and local Scottish publications and websites.

Cake break encourages friends, colleagues and families to get together for delicious cakes and a cup of tea, while raising money for people affected by MS. Find out more here.

Grant was a great sitter and we were able to get through a number of set ups very quickly.

FOUND at Fisher & Donaldson bakery

Yesterday, I shot the chaps of FOUND to document their new music video which was recorded in Fisher & Donaldson bakery in Cupar.

It was a great shoot although I'd liked to have kicked about for a bit longer. The video looks like it'll be great - I'll pop a link up once it's completed.

Cheers again to the guys for being accommodating to what I was after and to everyone at the bakery for letting me wander about and letting me try an Aberdeen Buttery for the first time in my life!

Diane for the MSSociety.

Last Thursday, I photographed Diane in her home for the MSSociety magazine, in which she was interviewed.

Diane suffers from MS and has mobility problems as a result of this.

While I brought my usual gadgets, bells and whistles and pretty much 90% of my lighting equipment, I ended up shooting this with natural light and a reflector and I love the tone.

IoIC Scotland Awards

I shot the IoIC awards on Friday - The awards were held at the George Hotel in Edinburgh. Here's a selection of images.

It was a great event and it's nice to be part of something which recognises creativity in a commercial setting - especially given the constant threat of creative budgets being cut in the public sector.

As a side note, I was very happy to see that White Light Media picked up 6 awards.

I've had the plesaure of working with White Light a number of times. I can't understate how much I love the work they do and the care they take with every single commission they undertake. I'd worked on both titles of theirs which had picked up awards and was very pleased to have done so.

FOUND for The Skinny.

I was recently asked to shoot FOUND for the cover of The Skinny. Here's the result.

The shot was a bit of a collaborative effort. After the shoot was completed and the image developed, Tommy from the band added the excellent illustrations to the image - really lifted it up into something special. From there it was passed onto the mag itself for their digital team to work their wonders.

FOUND are releasing their 3rd album factorycraft via Chemikal Underground on 14 Mar. Read the online version of the article here.

The band were a pleasure to shoot - willing to give anything a go (apart from one potentially precarious shot sitting on top of a vintage wardrobe...) and I'm looking forward to more collaborative efforts with them in the future.

There were also a couple of other shots from the session included with the article in the magazine itself. Here's my personal favorite.

The Scottish Youth Parliament "WeCTV" Awards

As part of my continuing work with the Scottish Youth Parliament I documented their "WeCTV" awards in collaboration the Scottish Government’s No Knives, Better Lives campaign. The award ceremony was hosted by comedian and Galaxy FM presenter Des Clarke

We-CTV gave young people the opportunity to get behind the camera and report on knife crime as they see it, in a bid to educate their peers.

Participants in groups of up to five, were invited to create powerful two-minute films to discourage their peers from ever thinking about picking up a knife.

I was asked to document the event and the winners. Due to a number of participants being under 16 I cannot post all the images online but here is a selection.

Images were to be used in a number of different mediums and for a number of publications so simplicity was the name of the game with these headshots. As a result, I resisted heavy post production techniques and extreme lighting to give a natural, relaxed but, above all, business like portrait.

Sally Hansen for GoReborn.

Following up from my previous post I thought I'd share another shoot which was completed this summer under the Go Reborn mantle.

Images were of recent ECA graduate Sally Hansen's final collection. Read more about the shoot here.

The initial idea we had sketched out was to use skaters and cyclists who inhabited the park and have them interacting with the model to push the urban styling. When we reached the skatepark however, the fantastically strong light inspired me to change direction and concentrate on the shapes, lines and contrast with which we were provided.

I was away in London recently and got cheered up waiting for my 5am flight by the sight of one of my images in the December issue of Professional Photographer magazine.

Help Portrait.

This year, I am taking part in the Help Portrait project.

I am looking for suggestions for who to photograph for this. It takes place on (or around) Dec 4th.

The project aims to encourage photographers to give something back to their community. It is not for profit, it's not about showing off and it's not about self promotion.

Hawke and Hunter - Indulgence Evening.

Scottish Youth Parliament's wins best small event.

A massive congratulations to Kate Bouchier-Hayes and the team at SYP for winning Best Small Event at this year's Scottish Event Awards.

I had the pleasure of being asked to cover the event, which took place last year in June and spanned 2 days and 3 venues. The aim was to highlight the importance of the issue of climate change to young people in Scotland.

Noir! Festival Edition.

Edinburgh was once again transformed into fashion and art night by Noir! last week.

This Noir! focussed on fantastic outfits by Jane Davidson and outlandish headpieces by artist Evelyn Morrison.

Mobile Art Market.

There's been a great write up in the Telegraph today for Ross Christie, a local artist with whom I've been fortunate to work with a number of times.

Ross, throughout the Edinburgh Art Festival, will be touring the exhibitions and openings with his self made "Mobile Art Market".

In his own words...

"Support your local artists! A mobile, pedal powered market is travelling throughout Edinburgh with local artists' prints, multiples, fanzines, artists self made books and lots of affordable artist made goodies.
The Mobile Art Market is a gallery and shop showcasing some of the work being made by emerging Scottish artists. It will travel between galleries, libraries, museums, parks, car boot sales, markets and festival events."

SAC Graduation 2010

The piper leads the procession into the hall.

For the 3rd year in a row, I was asked to cover the Scottish Agricultural College's 2010 graduation ceremony. Shown here are the results.

It's always a fairly lavish affair, held in Glasgow University's Bute Hall. The lighting conditions can be a wee bit tough to shoot in and I generally have to resort to using a fairly high ISO in order to ensure everything is pin sharp.

The images are used in promotional materials for the college as well as press releases.

Promotion is now in full swing for the next Noir!

I recently completed work documenting the interior and the food at the newly renovated Queens Arms in Edinburgh.

These images will be used on their website and in promotional materials.

One of the perks of food photography is getting to eat a lot of the food once it has been shot and I can happily testify as to the tastiness of the food on offer.

Queen's Arms Launch.

Featured are images from The Queen's Arms launch in Edinburgh. This Edinburgh institution has had a recent overhaul and a relaunch. It's a fantastic little pub with great food, booze and staff. It's no surprise that it has just won "Gastro Pub of the Year" and the GM, Alec Trousdale, "Bar Personality of the Year" at the DRAM awards.

Well done to everyone involved and I'd strongly recommend checking it out if you're in or around Edinburgh.

Exhibition.

Thought some of you may like to know that I am currently exhibiting this piece of work at 99 Hanover Street in Edinburgh.

The exhibition aims to illustrate the multiple approaches of contemporary portraiture today, doing so simultaneously within an intimate setting and medium where the exhibition has been designed to owe a shabby chic aesthetic .

The concept is to display your work in a "found" frame. I was lucky enough to find a huge faux gold frame on the street just a couple of days prior to the exhibition being hung.

The portrait is of a friend's father.

There are a number of great photographers displaying work at the exhibition and I would urge you to drop in and check it out if you can.

Go Reborn.

Over the past few and the forthcoming weeks, I have been working within the creative art and fashion publication "Go Reborn".

Previously a pop up shop set up in conjunction with Godiva boutique and Aware in Justice, Go Reborn have changed formats and will be working with designers, illustrators, photographers and artists to publish this summer.

All images are currently under wraps but you can see some behind the scene images here.

My photographic career was very nearly put to an end during the shoot when I was blinded by a twig hitting my eye at the start of the shoot. Thankfully, a trip to A&E once the shoot was over meant that I simply had to wear a (rather dashing) eye patch for a few days until the scratch healed itself.

Website relaunch.

Contrary to the lack of updates in the past couple of months, it's been an incredibly busy time for the business.

As you can probably tell, there has been a major rebranding and relaunch of the website.

The rebranding was designed and facilitated by Adam Wilson (www.fourcolourblack.com).

Now that the new site and design has been implemented I will update with my recent commisions over the next week.

Noir! came back to Edinburgh this December at Hawke and Hunter. The event, a mix of fashion, art and ideas was a great sucess and I was asked down to document the night.

Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to document the next also - the atmosphere, inspiration and people were really amazing and I can only hope more events like this occur in Edinburgh.

This month's playdate flyer saw me incorporating someone else's artwork (which I am ussually slightly reluctant to do as I fear it will reduce the design possibilities).

I was required by the client to use an existing image of "Drums of Death" (aka 29-year-old Glaswegian Colin Bailey). I wished to clearly show what the night was about and prominently feature the exiting press shot (copyright unknown I'm afraid but it's not mine...).

After a number of rejected designs, I settled on this.

Images used for the design are below. The one on the right is my image, while the one on the right is the Drums of Death press image with which I was provided.

Last week, I shot Godiva Boutique's Made to Measure range at the unveiling of new designs for the collection; with creations from designers RowanJoy, Lost Forward as well as Godiva's own range. Designer RowanJoy also unveiled, for the first time, her entire AW09 collection.

The model was the fantastic Cat from Stolen Models and styling was by the talented Fi MacKay.

On Friday evening, the talented group of illustrators, artists and designers known collectively as "Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja" opened their new exhibition at Pageant in Edinburgh.

The work is a collection by Ross Christie, Matthew Swan, Holy Wow, Daniel 'The Horror' Cantrell and Matt 'Culprit Art' Pattinson. T-shirts, prints and designs will be on sale right through November.

The exhibition will run until November the 27th at Pageant.

A new style for this month's Playdate poster.

As it was Halloween, we decided on a riff on a classic B-movie poster from the 50s.

Many thanks to my amazing model, Cara Hind, for her excellent work in being petrified.

In the next few months I will be moving away from the "toy inspired" poster designs which I have been submitting for this client and am excited about the new direction these posters are taking.

Hamilton's Edinburgh

Last month, I shot images for Hamilton's bar in Edinburgh. The images were a mixture of lifestyle and food shots which will be used to promote the bar in print and online.

The food was phenomenal and I couldn't resist having a taste as I shot.

We've been having a very successful month for clients of dnanderson photography this month. Further to Dollyleo being nominated for The O2 X Female Entrepreneur of the Year; This month also sees the wonderfully talented Ross Christie and his 'zine making alter ego "Altered Beast" becoming a Vans Featured Artist.

I had the pleasure of shooting Ross in his studio earlier this summer and am not at all surprised by the success he is having so far.

Sadie Sloss in the Sunday Mail.

I just found out today that this photo I shot a month ago has appeared on the front page of the Scot Careers section of today's Sunday Mail.

Sadie's been nominated for the prestigious O2 X Female Entrepreneur of the Year award. Dollyleo (and Sadie) are great friends of dnanderson.co.uk and I wish her and the business the very best of luck for the award.

Treacle bar and kitchen.

The Treacle bar and kitchen site went live last week.

Regular viewers of the blog may remember me mentioning my commission for this previously. The site looks great and I think the shots all turned out very well. All images on the site (except the few in the "fun" section) were taken on one day with some very accommodating models and staff from the venue.

Scottish Agricultural College Graduation 2009

This month I documented the graduation ceremony for the Scottish Agricultural College in Glasgow.

Held, once again, in the Bute Hall, this impressive setting was a pleasure to sit in but a bit of a nightmare to shoot in. Very low light conditions and high high ceilings meant that ISO's were high or exposures were long.

Still - I got some nice results from the day and my work was used in press releases to promote the college and the honorary award which were distributed to friends and members of the college who had made an outstanding contribution to the institution.

Other images will be used in the SAC prospectus and promotional materials.

Scottish Youth Parliament.

Bit of a late update this one but I completely forgot to post this after the event...

Last month I shot the recent elections for the Scottish Youth Parliament. This was over two days with the first day being the annual general meeting, a march to the Scottish Parliament building to highlight climate change and an evening of speeches and the following day being the elections themselves.

I was incredbily impressed with the passion that the members of the parliament showed and it gave me enormous hope for the future listening to the the young people discuss with poise and intelligence the issues which surround as all today.

Just back from a lovely working holiday in Turkey! Nice and sun-kissed and re-energised for photo work.Last week I shot the Grey Matter Exhibition at the Talbot Rice Gallery. The above work is by artist, Steve Bishop.

The work, by a collection of international artists, received some good media coverage and an article in The Scotsman was accompanied by one of my images (pictured below).

Altered Beast

A week or so ago I shot the degree show of ECA graduate, Ross Christie.

Ross's space, titled "Altered Beast" was a 'zine studio come shop for his creations. It was incredibly impressive and I just hope the photos do it some justice.

Ross's work (and shop) will be open from 13–23 June 2009 at The Edinburgh College of Art and I would thoroughly recommend popping along if you get the chance.

Napier University Graduation Ball.

At the end of May I photographed the Napier University Graduation Ball, held at The George Hotel in Edinburgh.

The evening saw me shooting a mixture of formal portraits and more reportage style coverage of the dance and was a delight from start to finish.

Images taken for Treacle bar on Broughton Street in Edinburgh. Treacle opened last month and has gone from strength to strength since. Their warm and contemporary atmosphere, exciting menu (pictured below is one of their deep fried jam sandwiches) and friendly staff make this a perfect venue for a night out or afternoon in. Roars not whispers.

Last week I undertook a commission for the Scottish Youth Parliament for their Roars not Whispers project.

The event, run at Perth College, saw young people from all over Scotland gathering to discuss issues such as HIV and Aids, homelessness and poverty. Workshops were organised by Oxfam, Save the Children and Christian Aid.

Images will be used to promote the organisation and event in the media.

Marhall Hotel Glasgow

Last week I was asked by 5 star hotel MarHall in Glasgow to document their newly formed Jazz Brunch. The event was a great success and the opulence of the surroundings was more than matched by the fantastic food.

Cara for "Recycling is Chic".

Tuesday saw me shoot the fantastic Cara Hind for the "Recycling is Chic" book on which I am currently employed.

Cara was a joy from start to finish - fun, accommodating and stunning. The blue skirt she's wearing was made from an old curtain (the designer calls the creations "Skirtains") while the red skirt was crafted from an old scarf.

Most of the images are now finished so my work on the book is drawing to a close. It'll be published in September - I'll post more details when I get them.

Last night I shot Noah and The Whale for the Skinny Magazine.

I shot on digital (as realistically, turnaround times in modern publishing is simply too short for film) but i enjoy processing images to give them a more "organic look". A bit of grain here and there can evoke a lot of emotion.

Recycled Fashion.

Last week, as part of Squared Images, I undertook more work from designer Di Jennings and Alchemy Arts with shots for their upcoming book on recycled fashions.

Provincially titled "Recycling is Chic" the book will aim to show what can be done with recycled materials and a bit of creativity.

I had previously photographed creations for them last year but, since then, the project has really blossomed and I was delighted to be asked to shoot more for them since their book deal was signed.

DNS Shoot.

These shots were taken for White Light media for a shoot on network security company, DNS.

The shoot was a quick one, just over an hour for four people but I managed to get some good results despite being stuck in quite a dull room with no natural light.

Baillie Gifford Annual Dinner Dance.

On Friday I was asked to cover the Baillie Gifford Annual Dinner dance at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

This was a lavish, black tie, event which ran the course of the evening. The evening went very well and everyone there seemed really to enjoy themselves.

I managed to get some nice panoramic shots during the evening, an addition to events photography that I think makes a big difference.

This photo was taken from a session I shot about 2 weeks ago for Denise Hawkes, an Edinburgh based make-up artist. Denise was fantastic to shoot, fun and helpful and it's good to see her photo featured so prominently.

Playdate Flyer.

Slightly late update this one but here's the flyer for December's playdate. I think it worked out quite well. I was aiming for something nice and simple for this month.

I've been incredibly busy for the past few weeks with product photography hence the lack of updates. I was able to take a few snaps for myself over the Christmas period though which was a great change of pace.
